Order of proceedings
Please arrive in your regalia 60 minutes before your ceremony is due to start. It is important that you arrive early, otherwise you may miss the registration process for your ceremony.
- Leave any personal belongings with your guests. You need to have your hands free when you walk across stage and may not be seated in the same seat after presentation of your qualification
- Go upstairs to the student registration/marshalling area (your guests should move into the theatre to be seated)
- Look for your name on the marshalling boards – names are listed alphabetically under the qualification you are receiving
- Take note of your registration number and line up in order of that number – marshals are there to assist you
- Ten minutes before the ceremony, join the procession from the marshalling area to the venue. Remain in number order in your assigned lines while waiting for the processional music.
- Follow the Marshals' guidance to your reserved section when entering. Remain standing until all procession members are seated, then sit down.
- Stand with the group during the Chancellor's conferral speech. Put on your trencher/bonnet after the Chancellor says "I Chancellor of the University of Waikato by virtue of the authority vested in me, do now confer the following degrees and award the diplomas and certificates to the candidates here today and those listed in the programme but not in attendance."
- Wait for Student Marshals to lead your row (in numbered order) to the left-hand side of the stage when your qualification group is announced.
- When your name is called:
- walk to center stage
- shake hands with the Chancellor
- proceed to the Vice-Chancellor/Dean to receive your certificate and have your photo taken
- return to your seat via the aisle.
- Follow the Marshal's directions to exit the arena at the ceremony's conclusion.
If you have any cultural requirements that may impact ceremony proceedings or if any of your guests require assistance, please let us know by emailing events@waikato.ac.nz prior to the event.
