Our vision for security and crime science

Learn about our vision to advance security and crime science research in Aotearoa New Zealand, combining academic excellence with real-world impact.

Our Vision

The vision of Te Puna Haumaru New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science is to gain a better understanding of patterns of crime and harm in Aotearoa New Zealand, and to improve efforts to reduce that crime and harm and improve security for all citizens.

How we will achieve this

  1. We will establish close links with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, Ara Poutama Aotearoa Department of Corrections, New Zealand Defence Force, and Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, Iwi and Pacific Communities to guide our priorities.
  2. We will establish a world class centre for research to respond to those priorities drawing on the skills and expertise of multiple disciplines including statistics, psychology, geography, political science, computer science, and indigenous knowledge and culture.
  3. We will develop educational courses for undergraduates, postgraduates, and professionals responsible for crime reduction, community safety and security.
  4. We will publish rigorous research to inform public policy and practice in the areas of crime reduction, national security and policing.
